HEARTFELT STILL
This is a video of a nipple, a woman’s breast that appears to have a life of its own, giving the impression that it is the heart of an independent creature. By exploring abstracted physiology, it raises the question of how independent desire can be from identity; whether it is derived from the organ itself or whether it is controlled by the brain and requires a more complete, human setting.

The creature's contracting muscles, which harden the nipple, change throughout the video according to the rhythm of its own heartbeat.

Sometimes the footage is very calm and the rhythm is very slow, inspiring trust and confidence; but this calmness is interrupted by phases in which the heartbeat and the contracting muscles get faster and faster. This becomes very alarming and is reminiscent of an adrenalin rush. It depicts physical exertion and is a reference to both sexual stimulation and the natural ‘fight or flight’ defence system of humans.

The nipple has a soft surface, it is very vulnerable, but it knows how to protect itself by hardening. Through this process it seems to emphasise its independence, it wants to survive. It comes out of its body to merge, or have conflict, with the reason of the adrenaline rush: the threat, the sexual partner or perhaps the viewer.

This video demonstrates an entity. The heartbeat reflects love and blood supply whilst the nipple stands for the sexual and erotic. Both are very much connected and unmistakably influenced by each other.
